The Polo Program at Rancho Amistad is managed and directed by our resident club professional Santos Arriola.
Crisanto "SANTOS" Arriola:
Born in Queretaro, Mexico, Santos first came to the United States to work with horses in 1992.
By chance, he met with, and was immediately introduced to the sport of polo by Wally and Deborah Ganzi. He was eventually hired as their Polo Pro, and began playing in the Indio circuit, as well as the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club (now San Diego Polo).
In order to improve his skills, Santos spent time in Argentina learning and playing with 6-goaler Tolo O'Campo, as well playing and riding at polo clubs in Mexico.
He is currently rated by the USPA at 4 goals (Arena) and at 2 goals (Grass).
While Santos loves to play with all breeds of horses, he prefers Thoroughbreds on the polo field because of their great speed and power. He believes to make a really good horse you first have to become the horse's friend and earn its trust. Once you build that relationship, Santos believes it will all come together for you on the playing field.
One of Santos' great skills is being a true horseman. One can be a good polo player - but only a few know the true meaning of "horsemanship". Santos does. He can start a totally green horse and slowly train it to become a good polo horse through knowledge, care, and a thought process that studies a horses' mind and spirit to bring out the best in a horse.
His exceptional riding, playing, and teaching skills have elevated the level of play for everyone at Rancho Amistad.
Santos is currently available for player lessons, and welcomes both new students and seasoned players.
